Another participant of my mini author interviews is fellow Twitter addict and Wattpadder Elizabeth Bruno. She is hilarious, talented, and you should check her out! Meet Elizabeth, aka @hesinstripes
1) What made you decide to start writing?
Fanfic? That's an easy answer, I was having a hard time finding quality fanfiction that I could really get into. I decided to write something like what I was looking for. Writing in general, now that's much more complex. I've always loved writing and indulged in it in some capacity since adolescence. I remember writing a short story in second grade, I think it was our take on The Princess and the Pea. Even then I was researching the best words to convey what I wanted to say and thinking about character development, though in the way a 6 year old would. And of course, adding humor because my writing style seems to alway incorporate humor in some way. I wrote poetry and songs in my teenage years, but into adulthood it sort of fell by the wayside. About 4 years ago I started blogging on a whim, mainly because I was craving that creative outlet that writing gave me. That developed into a part time writing job, so now I write everyday.
2) Your work is in the fanfiction genre. why fanfic?
My daytime writing is very real and straightforward. I contribute to a major wellness website and write heavily researched articles. I love research and fact, which is probably why my fanfic mirrors real life events. I research a lot for my fiction too. However, the fantasy and the escape of fanfiction is a nice break from reality. We all need to escape, and my favorite thing to get lost in is my thoughts about Harry Styles.
3) Your stories feature the members of One Direction prominently. What is it about them that makes you want to write about them?
I would've never discovered fanfiction or even WattPad if it weren't for One Direction. I always say Harry Styles is my happy place. Their music and the band as whole make me happy and give me a break from reality and adulthood in a way. It seemed like a natural progression to merge my writing with my love of the band. With GREEN specifically, I was inspired by the cover photo of Harry. His eyes sparked a story and I just began to write. His personality and persona are certainly interesting, and I don't think he's always accurately portrayed.
4) The story GREEN has gained quite a following. What do you attribute this to?
Thanks, it's been taking off lately and I attribute it to the readers. They are amazing and have shared the story with others and really latched on to it. Of course, the healthy dose of smut gets people talking, but there's still a story there that people connect with. I get messages all the time from readers who say something reminded them of Liv and Harry and I love that. I also really love the messages and comments when people yell at me because I made them cry or get angry. That is such a great compliment to be told you made someone feel real emotions with your words. I have to say that the small community of writers I've found since joining WattPad have also been amazing. We've really begun to support each other, share quality work, and get the word out that there are some really amazing stories and authors going unnoticed.
5) What would you say to any of your readers who may be thinking of starting to write? Any words of encouragement?
I've heard from a few readers who've made the leap into writing and I think that's great. If it's something you feel compelled to do and you've got a story in your head, by all means get it out, go for it. My biggest words of encouragement are to be yourself. Find your own writing voice and personal style. People respond to authenticity. My favorite authors all have unique voices that come across in their work. One last tip is take pride in your writing and editing is your friend.
Elizabeth is the author of GREEN, Salon 57, Sealed With A Kiss, and most recently Talking Fast, Talking Dirty. Her writing is fueled by a mild dose of insomnia and a heavy dose of One Direction.
Olivia's life felt routine and unfulfilling, despite her success as a fashion designer. Life was uninspiring and colorless, that is until she awoke and saw his green eyes staring back at her. That's the moment things changed, but neither she or Harry knew just how much.
