1) If you could rewrite any favorite novel, published or otherwise, to change something about it, which would it be and what would you change?
My favourite books are the Harry Potter series, and I don't think I would change anything about them. I love every part of them, and although there are some incredibly sad parts, I trust that J.K. Rowling chose to include those scenes because they added to the story, and I think the books are perfect as they are. I don't think I would rewrite anyone else's book to change anything, as each story is entirely individual to that writer and is a product of their amazing imagination. I may sometimes want to scream at a character for doing something stupid, but that shows I am invested in the story, which means the writer has accomplished their goal.
2) Where do you draw your inspiration for your work?
I draw inspiration from everywhere, all around me, all of the time. Sometimes I will be sitting at my desk in work and a scene will suddenly pop into my head and I have to scribble it down on a few post-it notes until I can log on to Wattpad to write it properly. My phone is full of notes with half written scenes, ideas for upcoming plots and random oneliners I plan to fit into future chapters. My book follows real-life events, so when something big happens in the One Direction fandom I usually can't wait to write about it!
Songs are a huge inspiration for me; I was inspired to write the No Control series by (funnily enough) the song No Control by One Direction. I wanted to write a story about a relationship that was enticing and addictive from the word go, where common sense goes out the window and everything that happens is driven by desire and a lack of self-control. The song Little White Lies was also a heavy influence, as those who have read the books will know.
My characters are inspired by my friends and family - at least four characters in No Control are real people with the same names in real life, and are exactly the same in my books as they are in the flesh! Only three of them know they exist also in a Harry Styles fanfiction though...
3) Your No Control series features Harry Styles. What is it about him that you find so appealing to use as a character?
What isn't appealing about Harry Styles?! For me, he is good-looking, kind-hearted and a bit mysterious. He likes his privacy and upholds strong family values, and is the sort of guy you could take home to your mother! I find him easy to write about and I try to keep his character in No Control as close to his real character as possible. I hope I do him justice!
4) No Control has gained quite a following, with almost 100,000 reads. What do you think is the draw of this particular work?
I'm not sure - I decided to write the type of story I would want to read, and I like reading about famous Harry rather than AU Harry. I wanted my book to be current and realistic (I can't stand far-fetched fanfics!), which is why I chose to follow real-life events so the readers could identify with it. My leading lady is a One Direction fan, so I think my readers relate to her because she regularly loses her cool around Harry and the other boys - I get a lot of comments simply saying "This is so me!"
I also have a bit of an obsession with spelling, punctuation and grammar, and I literally spend hours editing and proofreading every chapter before I post it to make sure it is perfect. I can't read books that are poorly written, so I set myself a very high standard (and I kick myself when the occasional mistake slips through the net.)
5) If you could collaborate with any other Wattpad author, who would it be, why, and what would you like to write?
I'm actually a bit of a control freak, and I have a tendency to take over when I am let loose on something! As much as I adore writing, I don't think I would be a very good co-writer, as I like to own my work completely, and put my personal stamp on things. So for that reason I wouldn't collaborate with anyone else, but I have helped out on the odd occasion when fellow Wattpadders have suffered writers' block or needed a sounding board, and hopefully I was of some help!!
A self-confessed 1D Addict, Rachel admits to spending far too much time on Wattpad. She began writing her first book "No Control" in March 2015, which has since spawned the sequel "No Control | Holding Me Ransom," and the spin off to No Control "Trace of Innocence," told from Harry's point of view. She lives in the north of England and works in Credit Control, which indulges her passion for numbers and accuracy, and has a weakness for birthday cake, gingerbread lattés and creamy cocktails.
Jessica Bradshaw is a huge fan of One Direction, and has been in love with Harry Styles since she saw the boys live on the Take Me Home tour in 2013. When a random house party in March 2015 (during a break from the first leg of the OTRA tour) forces their paths to cross, Jess is thrown head first into the celebrity world. Struggling to cope with her new found fame as Harry Styles' rumoured love interest, she is forced to abandon all common sense and put her trust in the boy she barely knows.
What really goes on behind the scenes of the biggest boyband in the world? It's all about to be revealed...
The book follows real-life events from March to June 2015.
